My baby is seven! Not so much a baby anymore, I guess, but it's very hard to believe. I love that he is still such a sweet soul, and has a lot of his little boy innocence. He's had a very happy birthday weekend -- the robot-making party was a great success, he's enjoyed skiing both days, there are lots of presents, and grandma and grandpa are visiting tonight. He may need a recovery day!I hope your weekend is going well too! This beautiful photograph is by Elgarbo Art on Etsy.

Happy Friday! Eddie's birthday party is tonight. I can't believe he's turning seven tomorrow. Wow. The boys will be tearing apart old radios and things, then building robots with the parts and other weird pieces we've collected. We're drawing our inspiration from these goofy amazing guys on Etsy. My sister even found lots of old binoculars and opera glasses on ebay... Eddie has been planning this party in his mind for months, so I hope it's a success. I'll try to snap photos between helping to screw on arms and wheels. Happy weekend to you and thanks so much for visiting!

Weekend Views

There was a marvelous purple light out our back door last night...and we enjoyed lovely views on our snowshoe yesterday...It has been a rough week in our valley. A young boy, a student in Eddie's small school, died in an avalanche while he skied at Vail last Sunday. My heart aches for his family. Our community feels the loss deeply and over 1000 people attended the service to celebrate his happy life Friday. We go on, reminded to live life as fully as this boy did. And we hug our little ones...as often as we can!

600th Post: Ode to Cookie

Happy Tuesday! Are posts like birthdays? When we reach the higher milestones, maybe we should quietly let them pass? I'm not really sure, but the other week I realized I was coming close to the 600th post and I felt... pressure! Hmmm, that may be one reason for the light posts lately. 600 is a lot of time on the blog, but I decided not to let this one pass unnoticed and I decided to honor Cookie Magazine for my 600th. It's the first place I learned about blogs, probably in about February of 2007. I still have almost all my Cookies (there's a joke in there somewhere) as you can see, and in an issue right around Feb. '07, Cookie mentioned Ohdeedoh (which, btw, just recently seems to have lost it's identity and is now AT family). I remember walking to the computer with magazine in hand to see what they were talking about. That started my love affair with design blogs. I started my own little blog about 18 months later, hoping for some creative outlet. And here I am...still. Amazing.
Of course, Cookie no longer exists, having published it's last issue sometime in '09. But it's first issue, in December '05, was a big eye opener for me. This home below for example: I vividly remember loving it and wanting to be the woman who lived in it (Donna Gorman). I loved the architecture, her furniture, the colors, textures, her life -- all of it...
I made note to try to make our spaces this clutter-free, bright and full of good design, even with a child. She has an Akari in the living room corner for goodness sake! If she could do it, I could!
Also in that first issue was this guide to the modern nursery, and I thought why didn't they have this a year ago when we were putting together Eddie's?!...and finally (also in that first Dec. '05 issue) was Cookie's first travel section. I was transported. Here were beautiful photographs of exotic, good destinations to take children. This one is Palmilla in Los Cabos, Mexico, and who wouldn't want to be that mom in that bed?!...and there were so many other beautiful spots over the years - I've saved them all for reference. A lovely hotel with gorgeous down comforters in Austria...Jakes in Jamaica... blueberries in Buck's Harbor, Maine...I think when I went to Ohdeedoh that first time, I was just looking for more of the good stuff because once a month was just not cutting it, and I still love these features that made me look for more.
This girl reminded me so much of me and my sisters growing up..,This room was hugely inspiring for it's un-matchiness and individuality...
I remember loving the boy's chair...and spotting the phone (below) we had as children. Thanks to all my blog reading, now I notice the Moroccan rug, the sideboard and that sweet sheep too..Well, I'm really happy to be here still, and so thankful that a few of you visit me. Of course since I first visited Ohdeedoh thanks to Cookie, I've found many, many more blogs that have resonated even more with me than it has, and the world is different for me now! I can't believe how much inspiration is out there and I am awed and often overwhelmed by it all. Thanks for being there. Thanks for inspiring me. And thanks very much for stopping here.

Sunday Snowshoe and Mountain Lion Tracks

Happy new week! Yesterday, after some snow finally fell on Saturday, we snowshoed on a beautiful trail not far from home. We were the first humans on the trail since the new snow had come down, but not the first animals. We saw numerous little tracks, and the ramblings of one very big something, who we fell quite sure was a mountain lion. You can see the tracks under the tree in the foreground of the first photo, and the second photo is a close up. See how big?! I was so excited! We did not feel in danger - for some reason we felt sure he'd been there before dawn. Also, Eddie was not with us. Perhaps we would have turned around if we were protecting our son. After a 1/2 mile or so, his tracks left the trail and we continued on...I do love being out in nature. I hope you have a great Monday!

In Between House

Tucked amid the larch trees in the mountains of Japan...sits the In Between House, winner of The World's Best Villa at The World Architecture Festival last November. I like it's fresh cozy wood interior, but mostly I like how it peaks out at us from it's lush surroundings in that first photo. And I could look at the view from that last seat, with my feet on that ottoman, forever.

It's a beautiful, beautiful first Monday of the year here in the Colorado mountains. Bright sunshine, crisp air, clear blue sky. We just need snow! It's crazy - most years we've had feet over feet of it by now. I don't mind, really, but it is not good for the ski mountain at all. Come on, snow! I love snow. I love being out in the snow. I love the muffled quiet it brings when it's falling thickly. I love living where snow is good and welcomed. So, in the absence of snow outside my window, I'm gazing longingly at these superb homes photographed in their serene, snowy surroundings...Do you like snow? Happy New Year again! I feel ready for a good one.

Happy New Year! Accomplishments and Resolutions

Happy New Year to you! Thank you so much for stopping by here this year - I've loved reading your comments and clicking over to visit you too. I think it was a good year for most of you - true? Are you excited for 2012? Do you make resolutions? I usually do not, but this year have a few in mind. I am looking back on what I accomplished in 2011, using it to inspire the resolutions for the new year to come. So, here we go...
I will spend even more time in 2012 reveling in our outdoors with my husband and son... I will continue to care for and improve on our home...
I will continue to take care of myself - even better care! In addition to traveling and seeing family, I had a lot of fun training for the half-marathon, so I will set another goal for another race in the fall...and lastly, though this is a BIG one, I will embrace the budget! I'm typically fighting it, upset that there has to be one, but I hope to approach it as an inspiring challenge this year. I have found, since I started the blog, that posting the things I love here helps me "have" them in some way, and helps curb the desire to go overspend on whatever they are.
Now for some truly, truly random images, mostly from the blogs I read, that inspire my resolutions for 2012.
First let me say I will put this photo on my bathroom mirror...She is Amanda Ross-- I love this photo of her. Everything about her in this photo, and article, will inspire me.
Next, I'm laughing. I guess I'm planning to do a lot about the bedroom, because I grabbed these four from the inspiration file without hesitation or thought... Also, I will pay attention to life's good details. I'll focus on the richness of them, the patterns, the textures, add to them, enhance them, take the clutter away from them, really notice them...And finally, back to nature. It does me wonders to spend much time outside soaking it in. I plan to be in nature a lot this year and hope to share more of it with you...Again, Happy New Year, thank you, and I'll see you back here next week!

Before We Move On

Happy Friday to you! I'm so excited to be moving into the new year and I'll be back to wish you a good one later. Before we move on, I never did show you a full photo of our tree. Here it is on Christmas morning... It's definitely the best one we've found in the forest over the three times we've ventured out to fell one ourselves. While we had such fun searching for it, it really is emotionally difficult to cut a tree. We cut it from a cluster, though, which the Forest Service encourages. It helps the others to grow stronger. Thank you, tree. You've been a marvelous addition to our celebration.

Happy Monday! My sister is here and I'm so glad. I found such a beautiful recipe for Orange Almond Stars, which happen to be gluten free (since we both are), from Janis on Pinecone Camp so I made them for us!
My photos are quite amateur... please go see Janis's lovely pictures and you will see why I was so tempted to make these sweet treats.
I even made the candied orange peel that garnishes them (because the stuff from the store looked truly revolting). This is so much better I think, and was a lot of fun to make.

This is a huge auction week for good 20th century design. Besides Phillips de Pury, which was Monday's post, I browsed the catalogs for Sotheby's, Christie's and Wright, and for Christie's Tiffany auction. The Elizabeth Taylor auctions are also this week, and her fine jewelry collection blew the doors off any previous private collection auction. I love the pieces below from Wright...these from Sotheby's...these from Christie's...these Tiffany Studios Favrile glass chain mail panels ca. 1910 from Christie's Tiffany...And one more from Christie's Liz Taylor...

Phillips de Pury Design and Design Masters

Happy Monday to you! I hope your weekend was happy and restful.
Tomorrow and Wednesday, Phillips de Pury will hold its Design and Design Masters auctions, highlighting great work from the 20th century. They are offering some exquisite pieces. I was in an organic mood looking through the catalogs, so here are a few of my more natural favorites... They are: a Jean Dunand vase ca. 1925 (love!), a Jean Royere dining table ca. 1953 (see lovely details here), a Diego Giacometti ceiling fixture ca. 1978, a George Nakashima Conoid bench 1961, Serge Mouille pendants ca. 1955, Jean Royere Chenets from the 1940s, and a Jean Royere Ribbon form bed ca. 1945. There are a number of major 20th century design auctions this month. It's been fun browsing the catalogs. I will have more to show this week. And don't forget the Elizabeth Taylor auctions this week too -- entertaining whether you like auctions or not!

Little Mouse from Splendid Willow Avenue

I just received the sweetest little mouse in a matchbox, whom I purchased from Monika's Splendid Willow Avenue...He will be Eddie's for Christmas (please don't tell!). He's even more adorable in person, and I couldn't have bought him from a more gracious person or more beautiful on-line shop. Along with lovely Scandinavian goodies for the children, Splendid Willow Avenue carries unique women's clothing from Jarbo, fantastic Ilse Jacobsen boots and outerwear, jewelry by Asa Daxberg, and home decor. These are a few of my favorites (besides the mice of course!)...

Elephants for Christmas: Shukuru and Mutara

Happy December! This will be the third Christmas that I am giving the fostering of these two elephants to my sisters. Here is Mutara...
and here is Shukuru (see her caring for the little one in the photo just below these words?)...
Aren't they just amazing? They are growing so big and healthy. They are becoming good leaders, taking care of the younger, smaller orphans, and they are good friends to each other. Here they are together, Shukuru on the left and Mutara on the right...
And here they are in summer of 2009, when each was rescued separately by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya (Shukuru left, Mutara right)...
The Trust is fabulous. I can't say enough about what they do for wildlife conservation in their region of Africa, specifically the Tsavo National Park in Kenya. Among so many valuable initiatives is the orphaned elephant project, in which the Trust's expert staff rescues, nurtures and raises babies who have been separated from their mothers for various, often man-made (including poaching) reasons. Eventually, after a number of years, they release and integrate the orphans into the wild herds of Tsavo. I love that, for a minimum of $50 annually, you can help foster these babies. And that you can easily give that fostering as a gift! The Trust sends monthly updates to my sisters about Shukuru and Mutara. We also can visit their website to see the keeper's diary about our elephants' progress and interaction with their friends, both elephant and human. Go here to find out more. I really get so excited about this gift each year. I love being a part of these babies' lives, even in a small way!

Dodie's Things

I think it's the calm textures that caught my eye in each of these...Simple, beautiful textures. These belonged to Dodie Rosenkrans, a major philanthopist and patron of the arts, and are at auction at Sotheby's next week. Really, these are just a few relatively small (though not inexpensive) things from her grand, opulent, multifaceted estate: an Chinese amphora, a set of George I pine chairs from the 1720s, and an African vessel. I think these would work quite nicely in my environment!

Laura and I met a few years ago through blogging. One day she posted one of her prints on her blog and it resonated so much with me that I had to buy it. She just wrote me to tell me her new website is up. I couldn't be happier to see her new work! So beautiful. And some are available for sale here on etsy.
A little while back, Laura completed these delicate, lovely books for which she created the paper and the artwork, and then printed her works and the words of other artists on the pages. They are simply stunning...Laura is currently creating a fantastic looking 2012 poster calendar. It's available next week. You can order yours here.
Oh, and here is my Laura Brown print mountain 1 on my wall...I just love it.

Saturday Shopping (Dreaming): A Pretty Home on Majorca

I hope your Saturday is a little less snowy grey than ours is! I'm dreaming a bit today. How lovely it would be to have this to escape to... From The New York Times, "This 200-year-old two-story town house, once a wine cellar, is in Binissalem, a mountain village famous for its wine-making. In 2005 it underwent a gut renovation.... many of the original architectural details [remain]." It has four bedrooms, a terrace and garden area with fig and olive trees, and sits "on a tranquil pedestrian street near the town plaza, which is lined with cafes, bakeries, shops and a church, and which is also the site of a farmers’ market on weekends.... The village is nestled in the valley of the Serra de Tramuntana [Mountains].... The Mediterranean coast and the international Palma de Mallorca Airport are both about 25 minutes away by car." Read more in The NY Times. Sadly, $1.57 million is just a bit out of our budget... but it's fun to dream. And it comes furnished!

I hope your Tuesday was great! Today I began learning how to do this...This fiber artwork was given to me by a good friend for my birthday this year. I love it. It hangs on my wall where I look at it in wonder every day. Today, I went to her home with my sewing machine and she taught me the first few steps. We had so much fun. Have you seen these from The Selby? I love them...I love The Selby period. It's fascinating to see into creative people's personal spaces from Todd Selby's view point. Selby is also sought after by world renowned corporations for collaborations, and recently did a shoot for Fendi celebrating The Whispered Grand Tour. The Whispered is Fendi's guide to Italian master craftsmen...These photos are from that shoot. And the candy is from here, Moriondo e Gariglio... Wow!

Happy weekend! I hope it's cozy and full of family time.
This morning I had breakfast and a browse at our local bookstore. What a treat. I happened to pick up what turned out to be the best children's picture book I've found in a while: I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen...
The sweet, funny illustrations drew me in, but the story -- dryly, darkly hilarious -- was the kicker. It's home with us now, the newest addition to the library. Today I've found the New York Times book review, Klassen's tumblr, and a fun interview with him here. Definitely buy this one for your little one... or for yourself.

Hi? Wow, I've been gone a long time. I've missed my blog and blog friends. I hope you've been well. As Winter settles in here in the mountains, I hope I'm back more frequently. Fall was just so lovely; I spent it outside.
This fab home in Big Sky, Montana is a beautiful example of the way mountain home design has evolved in the past few years and I love it...The decor is clean, modern and really fun with so many custom pieces and fantastic textures throughout. It's completely sophisticated, while retaining all the natural elements --rough hewn beams, reclaimed lumber, chinking, stone, leather, and metals-- that evoke the West and are warm, cozy and solid when you come in from the raging snow. And I love its low, unassuming exterior profile: not overly showy at all. This home was pointed out to me by a friend whose cousin built it. You can see more of it in Mountain Living.

Happy Monday. Today I feel almost ready for Fall! My baby hit first grade this morning with a big smile, which helped a lot. So I find myself excited by interior spaces again, not just the great outdoors. This one definitely caught my eye-- a fine modernist collection in a cozy, Mediterranean-style, historically-landmarked apartment...Fresh, cool and comforting all at the same time. It is the apartment of photographer and modernist collector John Coolidge, featured in last week's NY Times. Read more about it here.

The Mountains We Climbed

It's Friday! Happy weekend. I've been looking through my pictures of Tuesday's hike. We had so much fun, I wanted to show you some more...Doug and I woke up at 3:45am to be at the trailhead at 6. We wanted to be up and down the mountain before any bad weather, in case any thunder clouds were to roll in in the afternoon. We could clearly see our first goal, Mt. Democrat, in front of us...We hiked for three hours up the valley and then the side of the mountain to the summit. The views were marvelous the whole way and especially at the top...After a lovely half hour alone on Democrat's peak, we made our way over to neighboring Mt. Lincoln. It's good to be able to summit two 14ers in one day...
We saw only a handful of other hikers. This guy was my favorite, in his coolie hat and his five-finger shoes. Clearly a natural...I hadn't hiked to the summit of a 14,000 ft peak since 1999. It was just a great day and I feel so happy about our accomplishment! It's good to be out in such vast nature and feel very small. It puts many things into perspective. I hope you have a beautiful weekend!

Summit of Democrat

Happy Thursday! Doug and I hiked up to the summits of 14,184 foot Mt. Democrat and 14,285 foot Mt. Lincoln on Tuesday. Here is a video view from the summit of Mt. Democrat... We started hiking at just under 12,000 feet elevation. From there we walked and snowshoed up to a saddle (a ridge between two higher points) at 13,200 feet then up to Democrat's summit, back down to the saddle, up to Lincoln's summit, back to the saddle and down to the start. We slid down two big snow fields to come down from the saddle, which capped off a really fun day!

When I started my running program back in late March, I said I'd take my camera along. It's ended up being my iphone because it's less bulky, and I'm usually breathing too hard to snap photos. But yesterday's run was a slow, fun recovery run and I took a few...It makes me very happy to be out in this beauty consistently. I also feel much stronger and better than I did a few months ago. Happy Friday to you! I've been absorbed in life here lately, so not very present on the blog. I apologize. This morning, though, I found this lovely painting...at Sotheby's. Love her and wanted to share her here. I'm taken with her sweet confident expression, her swept-back brunette hair, the suggestion of a diaphanous white off-the-shoulder dress, the delicate pink flower, the happy summery light.
I hope June has been beautiful for you so far. We are off for our first camping adventure this weekend and we can't wait. We've been through an adorable kindergarten graduation, and then I went off for a few days to my college 25th reunion. Marvelous time with old friends, and a mini reunion with my sisters in Boston following the college adventures. I'm happy to be home, finally experiencing some warm sunshine here in the mountains. Happy mid-May to you! Time is flying and I've not been here much. But I saw The Miller House on The North Elevation today and I had to post about it too. The Indianapolis Museum of Art has just opened it to the public. This is a must-see for me...Designed in the early 1950s for J. Irwin Miller in an amazing collaboration by Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard and Dan Kiley, it is a modernist masterpiece. Happy Thursday to you! I'm loving Madeline Weinrib's NY studio office as featured in New York Magazine. What an inspiring, treasure-filled space...Of course, most of the carpets and fabrics are her own designs, as are many of the art pieces. That fantastic folded suzani under the sleeping pup is an antique, and oh how I'd love to have it! Even the bowls filled with embroidery thread are so beautiful. The Suzani fabric embroidered in blue is one of Weinrib's newest, inspired by Matisse. I do love peeking into the creative environments of seriously talented, intelligent people. Don't you?

I grew up riding and showing horses. At this time of year especially, I get the itch to be transported, to be competing at the beautiful Spring horse shows I knew in my youth. So it's superfluous to say I'm fond of equestrian stuff. I love everything I see at Oughton Limited: the "quiet, classic chic" bags, the styling, the inspiration, and the story. Daphne Markcrow, Oughton's founder is horsewoman herself and has style in her blood. Love it all...

Playroom

Happy new week! It snowed yesterday. Hard. So we took the opportunity to organize a bit. A while back I told you I was working on our playroom. It's still stuffed with Legos, but this is the neatest it's been yet, so here are some photos...
When Eddie creates a Lego car (which is every day) he keeps it for months in the bookcase. It's tough to keep the collection looking neat, but his creations are a lot of fun. Ah well. And I wasn't able to do away with the Lego table, but my husband raised it up and I made a simple cover for it that is so much better than the sheet that covered it before.Our shelves...Eddie's shelves...The additional storage cubes are working well...Little pig.So there it is! A goal is to bring in nothing more unless some goes to good will. I still want to get a flokati, and the artwork for the walls is out being framed. As it evolves, I'll try to show you more. I'll be back tomorrow. My husband and I are off to ski in the new powder!
